Ear Surgery or Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that is done to set prominent ears back closer to the head. This procedure is most commonly performed between the ages of five and 14, but it can be performed on adults of any age. Most often, Otoplasty is used to correct ears that stick out too far from the head, but can also be used to correct ears that have failed to develop correctly.
Otoplasty is a highly effective procedure that can improve both appearance and self-confidence. It is fast, safe, and extremely effective. Otoplasty begins with an incision made behind the ear, after which cartilage is re-shaped and sutured or “pinned back” into place and left to heal. This procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic as day surgery. Otoplasty takes one to two hours to complete, and most normal activities can be resumed within two weeks. Candidates for Ear Surgery include;
- People who have ears that stick out
- People who have a very large conchal bowl (inside the ear)
- People who are not happy with the general shape of their ears
- People who have cauliflower appearance (usually from trauma through contact sport)
